Apple to fix iPhone security flaw in next iOS

Apple promises to fix iPhone's latest security flaw in iOS 4.2.

Apple has acknowledged a newly-discovered security flaw in the iPhone and is promising to offer a fix with next month’s release of iOS 4.2.

The new flaw allows someone to access the phone dialer on a locked iPhone by punching a certain sequence of buttons, thereby giving them the ability to make phone calls, send e-mails, and access the address book. Confirmed by Wired Magazine, the Boy Genius Report, and other online sources, the flaw was reportedly first discovered and posted by a user on the MacRumors online forum on October 22.

FaceTime beta is a backdoor to Apple accounts

As macnotes.de reports (German language link), until recently, the beta version of FaceTime, Apple’s video telephone software for Mac OS X, was quite careless with users personal data. When the just released FaceTime application was launched, the security question and the answer, along with the previous user’s birthday, from a previous log-in, could be accessed without having to log-in to that account. In combination with the Apple ID, which was also displayed, the password could be reset, providing complete access to the account currently registered making it possible, for instance, to go shopping in the iTunes Store with another user’s account.

The issue was problematic when more than one user shared the same computer, such as is the case with a publicly used Mac. Even if a user had properly logged out, the account could still be accessed because the application automatically put the password into the log-in dialogue. Apple reacted quickly and remedied the problem within the server. Now, a click on “View details” brings the user back to the general settings page.

iOS 4.1 released for iPhone and iPod touch

Apple has released version 4.1 of its iOS operating system for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The major update includes a number of new features and addresses several critical security vulnerabilities in the mobile OS. In total, the 4.1 release of iOS closes a total of24 security holes, 20 of which are related to the WebKit rendering engine used by the OS’s Safari web browser. The company says that all of the WebKit issues could allow an attacker to inject and execute arbitrary code. Continue reading →

Apple Releases iOS 4.1

iOS 4.1, which has had a few beta releases over the last couple months, has been released. It’s nothing too major, but let’s go down the additions:

  • Updated Game Center
  • “HDR photos”
  • HD video uploads over WiFi
  • TV show rentals

It should be rolling out next week. iOS 4.2, which will bring multitasking, folders, and other functionality to the iPad, will be here in November.

iPod touch gets revamped: retina display, FaceTime, HD video recording

Current iPod touch wasn’t thin enough for you? Look no further than… well, the new iPod touch just announced today. Naturally, Apple has re-upped its “iPhone without the phone” to include the Retina Display from the iPhone 4, an Apple A4 core, 3-axis gyroscope, Game Center, and FaceTime support thanks to the addition of a front cam. Oh, and speaking of cams, it’s also got a rear cam capable of HD video — but you’ll be paying a bit more than you will for that cute little nano: $229 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB (yep, 16GB and 128GB are both no-shows).
